week, president obama's offer to avoid the fiscal cliff was laughed at by republicans. this week, the gop countererred. extend the bush tax cuts to everyone, including the rich. revenue, cost savings, cutting, whatever you want to call it from vague areas such as closing, special interest loopholes and deductions, savings from health care and cuts in discretionary spending. other than that, no specifics. president obama wasn't feeling it. he said the gop must agree to one thing to get anywhere close do a deal. >>. >> wee going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. >> speaker boehner fired back. >> this week, we made a good faith offer to avert the fiscal crisis. now, we need a response from the white house. we can't sit here and negotiate with ourselves. >> so, here we are, just over three weeks from going over the fiscal cliff. you're probably getting a lot of stuff around the house this weekend wondering what the heck is going on in these houses in washington. this is the worst of american politics. they put themse

boehner met with the president to discuss the officials of the fiscal cliff. we're just days before the congress and the white house has to hammer out a deal or everyone's going to suffer the consequences. emily, what have you learned about today's meeting? >> allison we know that today's meeting was not on the schedule today. so that means we have to rely on the word from the white house deputy press secretary and a congressional staffer which happens to be the exact same words. they released two separate statements, both identical and this is the statement. it says this afternoon the president and speaker boehner met at the white house to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. we're not reading out details of the constitution, but the lines of communication remain. on wednesday, you'll remember a source familiar with the conversation said they did speak by phone, at that point it was the first time in a week they had done so. no reported breakthrough then. and then on monday, the president and speaker were at the same event together. it was a black tie congressional ball at the

stalemate on the minds of so many of you here, 27 days until the fiscal cliff. and i know you know that already, but guess what, folks? the deadline for congress and the white house to act, to stop the tax increase and punishing spending cuts, that deadline is coming up quicker than you may realize because did you know, congress plans to end its current session on december 21st? check your calendar as we did today. that's two weeks from friday. that means that under congressional rules any agreement, any legislation to fix this whole mess would have to be filed here by december 28th. here's the kicker. the president currently plans to leave town the day before that, on the 17th of this month. so the yearly obama trip to hawaii is set to start a week from next monday. you feel me here? see where i'm going? the window closing faster than folks think. what are our decisionmakers doing right now? among other things they are apparently sending signals through the media. republicans saying time to get moving. the president saying there is a deal to be had fairly quickly if the republicans com

states hardest hit say the money is just a start. with the fiscal cliff looming the staff is sure to face some resistance on capitol hill. >>> he spoke at this year's democratic national convention as an independent, but now former republican florida governor charlie crist is a proud democrat. crist posted a twitter photo friday showing his registration papers tweeting that he's proud and honored to join the party in the home of president obama. crist ran for the u.s. senate as an independent in 2010, but was defeated by marco rubio. some are speculating this move is in preparation for another run for governor against rick scott in 2014. >>> the supreme court has decided to take up two major same-sex marriage cases. the first is the defense of marriage act. the 1996 law denies federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples. right now around 120,000 legally married same-sex couples in the u.s. the second is california's proposition 8. that made same-sex marriage illegal in the state. a decision on these cases is expected next year. >>> is this the end of gangnum style mania? kor

country hits what's called the fiscal cliff. that's a combination of across the board tax increases for everyone, coupled with cuts in spending like defense, education, health care, and housing assistance. let's go live to our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin with the very latest. jessica? >> reporter: president obama has now personally turned down speaker boehner's opening offer to avert the fiscal cliff. he did it in a tv interview. what does president obama think of speaker boehner's proposal to avert the fiscal cliff? >> unfortunately, the speaker's proposal right now is still out of balance. he talks about $800 billion worth of revenues but says he's going to do that by lowering rates. when you look at the math, it doesn't work. >> reporter: he won't agree to eliminate a tax deduction for contributions to charity. >> every hospital and university and nonfor profit agency across the country would find themselves on the verge of collapse. so that's not a realistic option. >> reporter: but the president didn't say all this to speaker boehner. he said it in an intervi

the hour, a lot of news to get to on this monday. first, of course, talks over the fiscal cliff. they are going nowhere fast. democrats, they're basically telling republicans, hey, ball's in your court. we'll take you live to the white house for that. also, as the city grieves over an nfl player's tragic breaking point, new debates today about gun control and domestic violence. you'll hear both. but first, the u.s. has long believed syria has a huge stockpile of chemical weapons. now new concerns that chemical arsenal is on the move. secretary of state hillary clinton today issuing another stern warning against syria, using these weapons. the syrian foreign ministry quick to respond here saying it would not use chemical weapons against its people if it had any, but this announcement as turkey is sending warplanes to its border with syria after the syrian military bombed a nearby town of ras al-ain. you can hear that and see the smoke. this is the turkish side of the border. this is fueling more fears that more of syria's violence will spill into its neighbor to the north, being turkey

all eyes on the fiscal cliff, now just 22 days away. with the white house and republican leaders at a stalemate, president obama is hitting the road to rally support for his plan, which would raise taxes for the wealthiest americans. he met yesterday with house speaker john boehner, their first face to face meeting in more than three weeks. today the president will visit a detroit engine factory to rally support from auto workers. the president's meeting with speaker boehner didn't yield a big breakthrough, but the men did manage to agree on one thing, and that is that they will keep their negotiations behind closed doors. the men released this identical statement, saying this afternoon the president and speaker boehner met at the white house to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. we're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open. cnn's dan lothian is at the white house this morning. dan, i guess the fact that the lines of communication are open is a good sign. >> reporter: that's right. it is a good sign. it was just about a week a

evening. it's 10:00 on the east coast and we begin with brooking news on the looming fiscal cliff. and signs of a potential fall. for the past few nights we've been telling you about the frustrating lack of progress to avert a deal on automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that kick in less than four weeks from now. poll after poll shows the american people want compromise. but there weren't many signs that was going to happen, nothing was getting done. in a cnn/crc poll, 67% said washington officials would behave like spoiled children in the fiscal cliff discussions. only 28% said they would behave like responsible adults. tonight, signs that maybe some adult behavior might be prevail. and a compromise might be reached. joining me now, dana bash, jessica yellin, and david gergen. what's the latest? >> reporter: they are a long way from a deal. but late today speaker boehner and president obama did speak to one another on the phone. now, this is an important development because it's the first time they've talked in a week about the fiscal cliff. i am told, though, that there was no real
